Samsung today announced new 8-gigabit LPDDR4 memory designed for mobile devices. It may equips 4 GB of RAM in the future phones and tablets.
Samsung unveiled that they had developed the first 8-gigabit LPDDR4 memory specifically designed for mobile devices. In 2014, we may see 4GB of RAM in the future smartphones — possibly in the Galaxy S5. It will be another great leap forward in the development of the next-gen flagship models.
“With the new chip, it will focus on the premium mobile market including large-screened UHD smartphones, tablets and ultra-slim notebooks that offer four times the resolution of Full HD,” cites the South Korean giant in the press release.
Galaxy Note 3 is the most powerful mobile device by Samsung this year as it’s equipped with 3 GB of RAM, but next year, we can expect something about 4 GB of RAM and a lower energy consumption. The first 8-gigabit Low Power Double Data Rate 4 (LPDDR4) chip is specifically built with 20-nanometer manufacturing process, has 1 GB of memory on a single die, and it is the highest density available for such components.

With this development, not only Samsung points to a greater power with a performance increase of 50% compared to the LPDDR3 memories, but also 40% a lower energy consumption. Short battery life is a common problem of high-end smartphones now-a-days and precisely, for the same reason Samsung has been working on it since the next-gen memory module will improve performance while ensuring greater autonomy.
The LPDDR4 chip provide a transfer rate of 3200 megabits per second per pin, and it’s double of the LPDDR3 currently on the market.
Although, Samsung hasn’t commented on the advent of the new chip, but if rumors are to be believed the Galaxy S5 could be first smartphone to have 4GB of RAM with a 64-bit processor and a longer lasting battery.
