Rumors have been swirling that Apple is designing its own wristwatch-like gadget with smartphone features

Samsung, which recently unveiled the latest version of its Galaxy smartphone in New York, said it is working on a smartphone-wristwatch hybrid.

Don't call them a copycat.
Following rampant rumors that Apple is working on a wristwatch with smartphone features, Samsung got out of the gate first, saying it’s been working on one of its own.
“We've been preparing the watch product for so long,” Lee Young Hee, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile business, told Bloomberg in an interview.
“We are working very hard to get ready for it,” Hee said. "We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them."
Samsung has been ramping up its rivalry against Apple, making fun of the tech giant in ads last year for Samsung's flagship Galaxy smartphone. The two companies have also been duking it out around the world over technology patents with each claiming the other copied its designs.
Lee declined to give details on what the wearable device might cost, what features it would have, or when it would be available.
Apple has never revealed that it has a so-called smart watch in the works. But the New York Times reported last month that the iPhone maker is experimenting with wristwatch-like devices that have curved glass.
Wearable gadgets may be the next frontier for tech companies looking for an edge in the increasingly competitive mobile phone market.
"The race is on to redesign the mobile phone into something that you wear," Marshal Cohen, an analyst at NPD Group told Bloomberg.
Apple's stock has plummeted since hitting a record last fall amid worries its growth is slowing and questions about whether it can continue to wow consumers with its innovations.
Apple is looking to put out its wristwatch gadget as early as this year, a person familiar with the matter told Bloomberg.
