Micromax LapTab vs. Xolo Win: Which one’s better?

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
Micromax and Xolo are two of the biggest smartphone makers in India and arch rivals and coincidentally, both companies chose CES as the platform to release their respective 10.1-inch tablets. While the LapTab is a dual OS device that makes the most of both the Windows and Android platforms, the Win slate has acquired certification only from Microsoft. Let’s take a look at their features separately to find out which is the better gadget.<br />

<b><span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Xolo Win:</span></b><br />

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Xolo has partnered with AMD for this tablet and you will find an A4-1200 dual core processor within the device. It clocks in a speed of 1GHz and seeks assistance from 2GB of DDR3 RAM. The front side is completely dominated by a 10.1-inch 10-point touchscreen which has a resolution of 768 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Win tablet also features dual cameras, a 1MP webcam and a 2MP snapper and 32GB of internal memory which is further expandable. Although it runs Windows 8 out of the box, potential buyers will have the option of upgrading it to the 8.1 OS. The other common features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB connectivity and more can also be found in the slate.</span><br />

Its Intel Celeron N2805 processor is also slightly faster than the former at 1.46GHz, but the device brings the same amount of RAM. This device too has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, however, this one is deployed with the IPS technology and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">You get only a single 2MP webcam and its 32GB internal memory can be expanded further by up to 64GB. The battery life of the Micromax slate may be better than the aforementioned one as it hides a 7400mAh, but it may run out of power soon considering that it has to support two platforms. And what’s more, a dedicated keyboard dock turns the LapTab into a laptop and even brings additional power supply as well as connectivity ports to the table.</span><br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Micromax is thinking of expanding <br />operations in more countries<br /> for a while but January 2014 is going to be<br /> the month when this finally happens.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
 Micromax is thinking of expanding operations in more countries for a while but January 2014 is going to be the month when this finally happens. At Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma told TOI that his company would start selling phones and tablets in Russia from January 24.<br />
<br />
"Yes, we have global ambitions and I can promise you that we are going to take Russia by storm. We are going to show that an Indian company can also succeed on the global scale," said Sharma.<br />
<br />
This is first time Micromax, or for that matter a big Indian phone company, is showing its products at CES, considered to be the biggest consumer electronics show on earth.<br />
<br />
Micromax is introducing a new tablet for the first time at CES. The tablet, called LapTab, is a hybrid device that runs full version of Windows as well as Android, allowing users to switch between laptop-like functionality and tablet-like functionality. While the initiative to create this kind of hybrid device is spearheaded by Intel, Micromax is one of the first companies in the world to partner with Intel for the hybrid device.<br />
<br />
LapTab is likely to launch in India in February. According to Micromax it will be priced less than $500.<br />
<br />
In Russia, Micromax will use the same strategy that has enabled it to become India's second biggest smartphone seller.<br />
<br />
Sharma said there was demand for affordable smartphones and tablet that were good value for money in all countries. "We already sell phones in SAARC countries. For rest of the world, we want to start with Russia. Once we have gained foothold there, we will move to other countries in East Europe," he said. "Russia is our gateway to Europe."<br />
<br />
The company has already hired 10 senior-level executives in Russia. It plans to have a local office in the country. Recently, it hired Hugh Jackman, a popular Hollywood actor known for his role as Wolverine, to promote its phones.<br />
<br />
Micromax and other Indian phone companies like Karbonn and Lava have benefited from the demand for affordable Android devices. They have used Android to take on the companies like Samsung that are much bigger successfully. According to IDC, in Q3, 2013 Micromax was the second biggest smartphone company in India with a market share of around 17%. Karbonn was third with a market share of around 11% while Lava entered the list of top smartphone companies for the first time and was fifth with a market share of around 4.7%.<br />
<br />
But challenges for local phone companies have remained. Users often complain of poor aftersales service by them and the phones released by these companies rarely receive a software update.<br />
<br />
Sharma said that Micromax was aware of the problems and was hard at fixing them. "For Canvas Turbo (the company flagship phone), we offer on-site pick and drop service if something goes wrong with the device. We are aware that in the long run a company cannot be a big and reputable brand if it doesn't offer good aftersales service," he said. "I can promise that within six you will see a much improved aftersales service from Micromax."<br />
<br />
Sharma also dismissed Moto G, an affordable smartphone that Motorola, which is a Google-owned company, was scheduled to launch in India this month. "We have managed to compete with multinational companies for the last five years and have maintained our leading position in the market. One more device from a multinational company is not going to change that," he said. "The players in the market will keep on changing but we will keep on doing what we are good at."<br />

Micromax has built LapTab in partnership with Intel, which is pushing these hybrid devices capable of supporting both Android and Windows 8.1. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">While more companies from across the world will come out with similar tablets - or maybe you can call them laptops that transform - Micromax is among the first companies in the world to prepare this hybrid device. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">LapTab will launch in India in February. But the product is ready for the prime time. We spent some time with it to tell you our first impression of LapTab. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">In terms of hardware, there are two elements to LapTab. The first is the tablet. It has a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The screen shows decent colours but doesn't match the contrast or richness of colours found on high-end tablets like Nexus 7 or iPad. Brightness too is on the lower side and could be an issue if you use the device under direct sunlight. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The tablet has a plastic body and does feel a bit cheap. But thankfully, there are no loose parts and there is no bending and creaking. Given it is all plastic, LapTab doesn't feel too heavy in hand. In terms of connectivity and ports, there are lots of options. HDMI port is there and so is the micro USB 3.0 port, which is similar to the one found on Galaxy Note 3 and is backward compatible with micro USB 2.0. There is also a slot for microSD card. The tablet supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">In terms of internal hardware, LapTab is well equipped. It is powered by a dual-core Intel N2805 processor. It runs at 1.46GHz and is fast enough, considering it is powering a device that has full version of Windows. The internal storage is 32GB or 64GB. LapTab has 2GB RAM. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The device has a touch sensitive home button with Windows logo. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The other part of the hardware is a keyboard cover. The build quality of cover feels slightly better than the tablet. The keys are nice and offer good amount of 'clicky' feel considering it is a thin cover. This is a pleasant surprise. However the finish of the plastic case attached to the keyboard could have been better. Its corners have sharp edges and taking out or putting the tablet back in the case takes some effort. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">There is still a month to go so it is possible that Micromax will fix these minor flaws. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The keyboard and the plastic case connect with a flexible synthetic band, which can also act as a tablet stand, similar to how Apple's official cover for iPad functions. There is a magnet inside this band and it attaches to the back cover of LapTab to form a stand.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"> </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">While using LapTab, we tried both Android and Windows 8.1. When the device boots up, users get around 10 seconds to make a choice between Android and Windows. If you don't select any OS, then the device boots in the OS that was running on it earlier. If you boot into Android, you get the familiar (almost) stock user interface of Ice Cream Sandwich aka Android 4.2.</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">The performance of the device is good though lack of tough glass makes the screen feel a bit less touch sensitive. But scrolling through lists and installed apps and pinch-to-zoom during web browsing is mostly smooth. Just to try out the hardware, we ran GeekBench 3, an app that measures theoretical performance of a processor, on LapTab. The device scored 599 points in single core benchmark and 1001 in multi-core. The single core score, which is more important, is above average. It is around 300 points less than the best performing mobile processors like </span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Qualcomm" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Qualcomm</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> Snapdragon 800. But it is almost 200 points better that the MediaTek processor found in phones like Canvas Turbo score. The multi-core performance is, however, average. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">Under Windows too we found that </span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/LapTab" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">LapTab</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> performs well and without any significant lag. Almost all Windows applications are supported. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">To summarize, LapTab is an intriguing product. Its utility is not yet apparent because hybrid devices tend to sacrifice some of the simplicity associated with tablets. Unless we use the device for a longer duration it is difficult to say if it offers more convenience than a standard tablet or a laptop or not. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">There is also the matter of price and battery life. Without knowing the price and battery life of LapTab it is difficult to ascertain its value. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Rahul-Sharma" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Rahul Sharma</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">, </span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Micromax" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Micromax</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> co-founder who is in CES to show LapTab to media, believes that LapTab makes a lot of sense, especially for Indian consumers. "You don't have to carry two devices... you can carry just one. LapTab is a laptop when you want the power of a laptop and it's a tablet when you seek the convenience of a tablet," he says. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">While it is easy to understand the merit in LapTab and the concept of the hybrid device, we need to use the device for a bit longer to see if it can hit the home run or not.</span></div>

<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
India's second largest smartphone manufacturer Micromax has gone even more international than merely signing up Hugh Jackman to represent its brand. The company made a showing at the world's largest technology showcase event - CES 2014 in Las Vegas.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The event is used by both established technology companies as well as hopeful newcomers to showcase their latest innovations.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
So amid a slew of wearable technology, massive television screens and new futuristic vehicles, what did Micromax launch? No, it was not a phone.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The company instead launched the LapTab, a dual-boot Android and Windows 8 tablet. The LapTab is the first Intel-powered tablet to have a dual-boot OS from the company. It is likely to be made available in February but Micromax has not yet specified a price.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The LapTab is powered by Intel's Bay Trail-M, one of the first devices to be announced with that chipset. Micromax says the use of the Intel Celeron N2805 processor, clocked at 1.4GHz, will result in long battery-life. The tablet runs both Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and Windows 8. However users will have to reboot the tablet to switch between the two Operating Systems.</div>

The device has a 10.1-inch screen with 1280x800 resolution. It also comes with 2GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage space. It has a 7400 mAh battery, which should ensure better batter performance.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The device also hasa 2MP front camera with an ambient light sensor but it doesn't have a rear camera. It also supports microSD slot with 64 GB. In terms of connectivity the LapTab supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi for internet connectivity. Micromax has not yet announced a cellular model till now.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">

The Intex Aqua i4+ has recently been released in India and it is being pitched against none other than the Micromax Canvas Juice A77 which was introduced last month. The prices of the two gadgets are almost the same and they more or less have the same specifications as well. Here we have jotted down a brief summary of both the handsets to help you pick the right contender. Do take a look.</div>

This mid-range Intex device has been loaded with all the components that come under the sough-after category. The very first thing to notice about the phone is its 5-inch touchscreen which may not be the best in class, but does manage to deliver visuals in 854 x 480p resolution. A couple of cameras have been fitted on the device to make it apt for capturing images, recording videos and making conference calls.</div>
