Micromax and Xolo are two of the biggest smartphone makers in India and arch rivals and coincidentally, both companies chose CES as the platform to release their respective 10.1-inch tablets. While the LapTab is a dual OS device that makes the most of both the Windows and Android platforms, the Win slate has acquired certification only from Microsoft. Let’s take a look at their features separately to find out which is the better gadget.

Xolo Win:

Xolo has partnered with AMD for this tablet and you will find an A4-1200 dual core processor within the device. It clocks in a speed of 1GHz and seeks assistance from 2GB of DDR3 RAM. The front side is completely dominated by a 10.1-inch 10-point touchscreen which has a resolution of 768 pixels and an aspect ratio of 16:9.
The Win tablet also features dual cameras, a 1MP webcam and a 2MP snapper and 32GB of internal memory which is further expandable. Although it runs Windows 8 out of the box, potential buyers will have the option of upgrading it to the 8.1 OS. The other common features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, USB connectivity and more can also be found in the slate.

Key specs:

- Windows 8 platform (upgradable to 8.1)
- 10.1-inch 16:9 LED display with 768p resolution and 10-point touch
- 1GHz AMD A4-1200 dual core processor
- 2GB DDR3 RAM
- 32GB eMMC flash storage, MMC card slot
- Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0
- 1MP front camera; 2MP rear snapper

- 3550mAh battery

Micromax LapTab:

The Micromax LapTab takes the cake as it is a dual-booted gadget that runs both Android Jelly Bean and Windows. Its Intel Celeron N2805 processor is also slightly faster than the former at 1.46GHz, but the device brings the same amount of RAM. This device too has a 10.1-inch touchscreen, however, this one is deployed with the IPS technology and has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels.
You get only a single 2MP webcam and its 32GB internal memory can be expanded further by up to 64GB. The battery life of the Micromax slate may be better than the aforementioned one as it hides a 7400mAh, but it may run out of power soon considering that it has to support two platforms. And what’s more, a dedicated keyboard dock turns the LapTab into a laptop and even brings additional power supply as well as connectivity ports to the table.

Key specs:

- 10.1-inch IPS touchscreen
- 1280 x 800p resolution
- Android Jelly Bean and Windows
- 2MP front-mounted camera
- 1.46GHz Intel Celeron N2805 processor
- 2GB of RAM
- 32GB onboard memory, expandable by 64GB
- 7400mAh battery

Conclusion:

While Xolo Win is your conventional Windows tablet, the Micromax LapTab is a dual-OS hybrid which may suit people who want the best of both worlds. We are yet to get a first hand experience of how these gadgets perform, but strictly on the basis of features and specifications, we would opt for the Micromax contender. And you?

Xolo has followed up its Tegra 4 foray with a Windows tablet powered by AMD. The company, which has always tried to position itself as a slightly more premium brand in India than the competition, unveiled the Xolo Win at CES in Las Vegas. With no pictures to go on, we have no idea of how the tablet looks. It is definitely a middle of the road offering, but it’s a first for Xolo, which has launched Nvidia, Broadcom, Intel, Qualcomm and MediaTek-powered devices in the past. Targeted at young working professionals, the Win is powered by a dual-core AMD A4 Elite Mobility processor (Temash generation) clocked at 1.0 GHz and makes use of Radeon HD 8180 GPU for graphics. It has a 10.1” display with a resolution of 1366x768 pixels and 2GB of RAM. Internal storage is 32GB EMMC, but there’s no word on whether this can be expanded. It sounds very basic and hopefully this will mean a lower price tag.

The tablet has a rear camera of 2 MP, a front camera of 1 MP and a rated battery life of up to 7 hours. Being a Windows tablet, it will have all the apps and games that one expects from a PC. The product will hit the stores starting India by the end of this month. Xolo has not announced the price, but we expect it to be somewhere in the Rs 20,000-22,000 range. Xolo’s announcement comes a day after Micromax announced the Canvas LapTab, which dual boots Android and Windows 8. So it looks like the Indian rivals are finally looking at Windows as the next battleground. With the competition Android smartphone market is far from cooling down, a Windows-sized distraction is not exactly the need of the day.
