If you want a tablet that can take anything you can throw at it -- or just throw it -- then the new Panasonic Toughpads are for you. Best of all, you get a choice of Windows 8 or Android.<br />
<br />
The Toughpad FZ-G1 is a 10-inch Windows 8 Pro system packing a 1,920 x 1,200 display, 1.9GHz Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5-3437U processor, a 128GB SSD (upgradable to 2654GB), and up to 8GB of RAM. The system is powered by a battery listed as offering 8-hours of life.<br />
<br />
The JT-B1 is a 7-inch tablet running Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich.' It features a 1,024 x 600 display, and comes equipped with a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4660 processor, 16GB storage and 1GB RAM.<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #252525; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Both Toughpad have been put through -- and passed -- the rigorous MIL-STD-810G test for drops, fluid ingress and temperature, in order to ensure they can deliver reliable performance under conditions that would destroy normal tablets.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #252525; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"For nearly 20 years, Panasonic has engineered the most reliable mobile computing devices on the market," said Rance M. Poehler, president, Panasonic System Communications Company of North America. "Because our customers know they can count on our products to deliver performance and return on investment, Panasonic – through its Toughbook brand – holds nearly 80 percent market share in the rugged mobile device space. We believe our engineering acumen, vertical market expertise and reputation for reliability, backed by our world-class service, will result in the Toughpad family being the leading B2B tablet solution in the coming years."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #252525; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Panasonic hopes that the Toughpad will allow the company to grab 50 percent of the ruggedized tablet space by 2015.</div>

The Windows 8 Toughpad will set you back $2,900 and will be available in March, while the smaller Android version has a $1,300 price tag and should hit shelves in February.</div>

HTC Windows Phone 8X Review

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<span class="dropc" style="float: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 58px; line-height: 51px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px 3px 2px 0px;">W</span>indows Phone 8 may not be the most popular OS of choice at the moment but that hasn’t stopped OEMs from delivering truly great hardware. HTC’s flagship Windows Phone 8 device, the 8X, hit online stores well before Nokia launched the Lumia series. The 8X exudes style and elegance and is targeted at fashionable youngsters. However, does the 8X have something more to offer for the power users or is it merely a fashion accessory? Let’s find out.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Design and Build </strong><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The HTC 8X features one of the best smartphone designs we’ve come across in a long time. The blend of rubberized polycarbonate and glass gives the phone a premium look and feel and the bright, vivid colour options beg a second look. Sadly, we only get the blue and black trims here in India. The 4.3-inch, Super LCD 2 display takes center stage in the front with a row of capacitive buttons along the bottom. The volume rocker and power button sit flush with the side panel and while this gives the phone a very clean look, it’s not the easiest to use. Like all WP8 handsets, the 8X also features a dedicated camera shutter button.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MT10 brd_b CTR" style="background-color: white; border-bottom-color: rgb(232, 232, 232); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div class="CL" style="background-color: white; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Around the back, we have the 8MP shooter along with an LED flash and the speaker grill, placed at the bottom. The 8X also features Beats Audio enhancement for music and video playback over headphones. In terms of ergonomics, the 8X is miles ahead of its nearest WP8 competitor. With a thickness of about 10.1mm and weight of 130g, the phone feels very comfortable in your hand as well as pocket. Due to the moderately large screen size, the entire screen is within your thumbs' reach.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Features </strong><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Interface </strong><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" />This display is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 2 so it can take a fair bit of abuse before scratches start to appear. The HD resolution on a display of this size means you get a whopping 341ppi, which is great for web browsing or catching up on HD flicks. Sunlight legibility is also good allowing you to easily read the display outdoors. HTC has bundled some of their own apps like Flashlight, HTC Hub, etc. that we’ve seen on their Android offerings. Apart from this, it’s pretty much all stock Windows Phone 8 and unlike Nokia, HTC doesn’t seem to have bothered much with any exclusive apps for the platform.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>

<div class="CL" style="background-color: white; clear: both; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 0px; height: 0px; line-height: 0; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /> </div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
Apart from a slight stutter that creeps in every now and then, the UI is quick and fluid. The display is bright and sharp and manages to produce vivid colours. The handset is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon SoC with a dual-core Krait CPU and Adreno 225 for graphics. This, coupled with 1GB RAM, makes quite a potent combination for any type of app you throw at it.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">Media </strong><br style="margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Audio quality is surprisingly good with Beats Audio. The stock music player does a good job of sorting out your music library and you have the option to browse through music and videos in the store as well. Beats Audio is only activated with headphones plugged in.</div>
<div class="MT10 brd_b CTR" style="background-color: white; border-bottom-color: rgb(232, 232, 232); border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-width: 1px; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; margin: 10px 0px 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: center;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Arial; font-size: 14px; line-height: 18px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px;">
There’s 1080p video playback support for MP4 files. There’s only 16GB of onboard storage, which is quite low considering this a flagship device. It wouldn’t have been this bad if we could expand the storage but sadly, HTC has left out that option.</div>

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
A splash of colour, Microsoft's latest mobile platform and a sleek new body are combined with more powerful hardware - is the 8X the phone to bring Windows Phone 8 to the masses?</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
HTC's been in a bit of a weird position these last few years. From the days of anonymity when it made Windows phones for others, it rode the crest of the Android wave when Google's platform launched becoming, pretty much, <em>the</em>Android handset OEM of choice.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
And then Samsung happened. HTC's offerings appeared to dip and even the pretty fantastic One X – struggled to make inroads against the seemingly unstoppable Galaxy line, currently led by the superb Galaxy S3.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">

HTC was up there at the starting block when Microsoft launched Windows Phone a couple of years back, and although it's competing with Samsung in this arena too – and its offerings haven't been what one would call "amazing" – HTC is clearly trying to make its voice heard.</div>

And what better way to do that with some pretty bright colours and a newer version of Windows Phone that the world's been waiting for for months?</div>

The HTC 8X comes in a range of colours - from muted black, to respectable red, to an elegant purple and a, quite frankly, hideous lollipop-lady yellow hue.</div>

First thing we noticed is how thin the HTC 8X is. Not so much an amazing feat of engineering, but a clever trick.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
With dimensions of 132.4 x 66.2 x 10.1mm, the HTC 8X is fairly average in size. But it's thinner round the edges to give the impression it's more svelte than it actually is. Not that this matters because it looks and feels thin most of the time and the slight curve around the back means it sits well, both on a surface and in the hand.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
</div>
<figure style="background-color: white; border: 1px solid rgb(178, 178, 178); clear: both; color: #333333; cursor: pointer; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16.363636016845703px; line-height: 17.27272605895996px; margin: -1px 0px 20px; overflow-x: hidden; position: relative;"><img alt="HTC 8X review" height="224" src="http://cdn3.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/mobile_phones/HTC/8X/HandsOn2/HTC_8X_review_4-580-90.JPG" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; display: block; height: auto; margin: 0px auto; padding: 0px; vertical-align: middle;" width="400" /></figure><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">
</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
In fact, in the hand, it looks the same size as the HTC One X, despite the appearance given in our picture above.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
Add to that the material the HTC 8X is made of – polycarbonate, like the One X – and you instantly have in your mitts a handset that feels like a real premium device. It's a unibody design so it's all nice and neat (win) but at the expense of a memory slot and replaceable battery (fail).</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">

The front of the HTC 8X is taken up by the display. If you like what Nokia did with the Lumia 800, or indeed what HTC did with the One X, you'll be a fan of this too.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
The screen just looks like it's been stuck on top of the phone and adds to that premium feel. There's also a splash of colour around the earpiece to remind you that the two are linked.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">

Next to this, you'll find the front-facing wide-angled camera, and the three Windows Phone softkeys at the bottom – back, search and menu.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
That screen is an HD display at 720x1280. Spread over 4.3 inches, it's easily as sharp as Apple's retina display, which no longer appears to be anything special by modern standards.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
The top of the HTC 8X is fairly minimalist with nothing other than the 3.5mm headphone jack and the lock button. Although we're not necessarily fans of lock buttons on top of larger phones due to the awkwardness they present, here, we weren't too fussed.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
Due to the shape of the handset and the way it sits, it's easy enough to press with the index finger whether you're a left or right hander. Our only complaint is it is quite subtle and a few times, we had to feel around to find it if we were looking elsewhere. It doesn't stick out much.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
The left hand side of the HTC 8X is completely bare, whilst all you'll find down at the bottom is the micro USB charging and syncing port.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
The volume rocker is on the right and below it is a camera shutter key. We are always pleased to see these because it makes the art of launching the camera and taking a photo so much easier than messing about with software, no matter how good said software is.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
There's also a tray for getting that micro SIM in – but you'll need to use a special tool to open it so make sure you keep it in a safe place.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
The rear of the HTC 8X is a thing of beauty. That polycarbonate body really sets it off – as does the colour which sits beneath a silver HTC logo and another displaying the Beats Audio heritage. And of course, there's that main snapper with LED light which HTC promises will deliver amazing results.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
</div>
<figure style="background-color: white; border: 1px solid rgb(178, 178, 178); clear: both; color: #333333; cursor: pointer; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 16.363636016845703px; line-height: 17.27272605895996px; margin: -1px 0px 20px; overflow-x: hidden; position: relative;"><img alt="HTC 8X review" height="224" src="http://cdn1.mos.techradar.futurecdn.net//art/mobile_phones/HTC/8X/HandsOn2/HTC_8X_review_3-580-90.JPG" style="background-color: transparent; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; border: 0px; display: block; height: auto; margin: 0px auto; padding: 0px; vertical-align: middle;" width="400" /></figure><div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; width: 480px;">

<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
The 8X will be pitching itself right against Nokia's latest Lumia range – and with the Lumia 920 also coming in a number of colourful iterations, telling them apart may be harder for those who aren't as used to Windows Phone products.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: Helvetica, arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-top: 10px; width: 480px;">
But there is a difference in that the HTC 8X doesn't come with 4G LTE connectivity in the UK, whilst the Lumia 920 does. Which means it'll likely be cheaper – and that may be its saving grace for late adopters.</div>

Tablets are fantastic devices, whether for reading, playing games, watching movies or simply browsing the web. But in all these activities, the user is a consumer. There is pre-created content that you access. A tablet, whether it's the iPad or an Android device, isn't suited for creation; for true productivity, if you will.<br />
<br />
Windows 8 was meant to work well on touchscreen devices with its Modern UI, while still retaining the core functionality with the 'Desktop' app, which transported you to the familiar Windows interface. There have been plenty of touchscreen laptops running Windows 8, but they don't offer the kind of portability that a tablet does.<br />
<br />
The Acer Iconia W4 changes the game. It puts Windows 8 on an 8-inch tablet, just like the iPad Mini or the Samsung Galaxy Note 5100. Is this the first tablet that actually lets you be as productive as you would be on a laptop?<br />
<br />
The short answer: Nope! The Acer W4 is a great example of the massive gap that lies between theory and practicality. On paper, you get the convenience of Windows with the added benefit of being customized for touchscreens. In reality, it's an operating system that fails on both aspects.<br />
<br />
The Problem With Windows 8<br />
<br />
There are two distinct personalities in Windows 8, or the subsequent 8.1 update. The first is the Modern UI, which features fancy 'Live Tiles' and a new breed of apps that are made for touchscreens. The other is the Desktop mode, which appears as an 'app' in the Modern UI.<br />
<br />
Modern UI is satisfactory as a touchscreen interface alone. It falters in some aspects when compared to the likes of iOS and Android, but scores on some others — there's plenty to like and dislike, just like any operating system. But its undoing lies in the lack of a good app ecosystem. The Windows Store simply does not have the same number or quality of apps that are available on Android, let alone the iPad. And because of that, it's almost impossible to recommend it for tablet use alone. Unlike the traditional desktop, touchscreen devices rely a lot on apps optimized for touch usage; without those, Windows 8 isn't an experience that's worth the money.<br />
And then comes Desktop mode. When you first tap it, the sense of familiarity it provides is a feeling that you lack on Android and iOS. This is Windows. On a tablet, this is Windows. You know it, you've worked with it, you know what you can do with it. But the moment you go beyond the looks, it starts falling apart. Since it wasn't made for touch inputs, it's difficult to operate it with your fingers. You will need to pair it with a Bluetooth keyboard and a trackpad too — make no mistake, you still need that trackpad for a regular mouse's input when you're in "productivity mode", as such. There's an awkward keyboard accessory, but it is too cumbersome. In fact, there isn't a single keyboard for any tablet out there that turns it into a laptop without compromising on portability. The Microsoft Surface comes closest, but even that hasn't cracked the engineering yet. So without that input of a keyboard and mouse, Windows 8.1 on a touchscreen feels lacking.<br />
<br />
Put the two together and you can see why Windows 8 doesn't work on a tablet form factor yet. For it to be a device that enables productivity, it needs a lot more: a keyboard, a mouse, and a USB port for pen drives.<br />
<br />
The Key Is Input<br />
<br />
The iPad was made for touch input. Android is made for touch input. Windows 8 tries to serve both touch and non-touch; and in doing that, it loses out on both markets. I have used Windows 8 convertible laptops, and in those, it makes sense to use it as a regular notebook PC for 90% of the time in Desktop mode and undock the screen for the 10% to indulge in some reading or light browsing in Modern UI.<br />
With an 8-inch tablet, the bulk of your usage is in the Modern UI, which does not have the apps to be a good tablet OS. And there's no real way to use it as a laptop, unless you prop it up on a table and attach a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse.<br />
<br />
In the end, I'm left confused. I don't know how I'm supposed to use the Acer Iconia W4, or what I'm meant to use it for. The iPad and Android tablets are clear in their purpose as devices to help you consume data, which is what I do on them. With Windows 8, I'm not so sure and that confusion meant that the tablet spent more time lying on its side than in my hand.</div>

Windows 8 is still not ready to be on tablets. Here's why...
