Nokia Lumia 830 review: A well-rounded smartphone

In fact the company has positioned the phone as 'an affordable flagship,' with a premium form factor and a good quality camera. While it's the successor to the Lumia 820, the phone is a major upgrade in terms of both form factor as well as other features.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The phone is also the first one to come preloaded with Nokia's latest Denim software update.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Is the Nokia Lumia 830 worthy of being called a flagship smartphone? We try to find out in our review.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Build and design</strong><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Lumia 830 arouses a feeling of familiarity as Nokia has not digressed much from its basic design philosophy which has been consistent across its premium devices, right from Lumia 900 to Lumia 1520. The key highlights of the Lumia 830's form factor is the use of a sturdy metal frame and the company's ability to make the phone slim and handy even though it has a complex camera module incorporating Optical Image Stabilization and its PureView technology.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43968784.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />It is not the first time we're seeing a metal frame on a Nokia Lumia phone. The Lumia 925 also sported one, although the Lumia 930 takes it to the next level. The frame feels very solid and makes the phone look tough as a tank. We had the black variant as our review unit which sported a dark grey frame. The orange and Black units come with a silver coloured frame. The frame has black bands at the top and bottom edges that serve as the antenna. The edges are not curved like the Lumia 925's but flat. You'd mistake it for a perfect rectangle but the corners are subtly rounded.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The phone's back features a removable, polycarbonate cover which is slightly curved towards its edges. This gives the phone a good grip. The cover sports matte finish. The big camera module protrudes out slightly. There's a speaker outlet towards the bottom. The micro-USB port and the headset jack are located at the top edge.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Removing the cover reveals the battery compartment, a micrpSD card slot (hot swappable) and a nano-sim card slot. The phone also supports wireless charging and the cover sports contacts for the same.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The right edge of the phone features metal buttons for volume control, power and camera, and offer good tactile feedback.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43968829.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The front mainly comprises of the 5-inch display with the three capacitive Windows Phone keys located just below it, backlit in White. The display panel is slightly tapered with the frame at the edges. You can also see the front camera, the earpiece and the Nokia branding.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Nokia Lumia 830 is a good looking phone that also feels solid and durable thanks to its metal frame and high quality construction. Although the back panel is removable, it fits snugly into the frame and there was no wobble. Even though the phone sports a5-inch screen, it is very pocketable and can be easily used with one hand.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Display</strong><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Nokia Lumia 830 comes with a 5-inch, 720p (720x1280p) IPS LCD display. Thanks to the use of Nokia's ClearBlack technology, blacks were really deep and Windows Phone's dark theme looked really good. Microsoft and Nokia are calling a 'flagship' and we expected a full-HD panel going by the market trend.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />However, we found that the Lumia 830's display looks bright and vivid, rendering sharp and crisp text and graphics. The flat UI elements such as tiles and lists don't pixillate even though the display is low resolution compared to flagships and even mid-range phones. Sunlight legibility was good and viewing angles were wide.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Software</strong><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Lumia 830 runs Lumia Denim which is essentially Windows Phone 8.1 with Update 1 with some Nokia-exclusive features.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Windows Phone 8.1 ironed out inconsistencies and achieves feature parity with competing smartphone platforms like Android and iOS. It pretty much covers the basics and would satisfy most casual users. You can read more about Windows Phone 8.1 in our Lumia 630 review.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Update 1 brings features like Live Folders, Cortana support (alpha) for India, SMS merge and forwarding, consumer VPN and Internet Explorer improvements.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />You can now organise apps or games by grouping them into folders similar to iOS and Android. You can press, hold and drag an app over another to create a new folder on the Start screen. Folders can be renamed by tapping on the text field above the open folder. The implementation is good, so, better late then never!<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43968831.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />You can now select individual text messages to either delete them out of a messaging thread, or copy and past them into a new message to forward them. One can also customize snooze time in the alarm app and configure a VPN (Virtual Private Network) connection to access a work network or use a VPN service to bypass geo-restricted website or service.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Another interesting feature is Apps Corner. It lets you create a customised Start screen, where only specific apps or games are accessible. This could be particularly useful in the workplace if you're issuing Windows Phones to employees or if your kids use your phone for games. You can even choose if you want to give access to Action Center and Settings.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The key highlight of the Denim update is the enhanced camera app now known as Lumia Camera. It comes with features like speedy shooting that instantly fires the camera as one presses the hardware camera key. There's a new Moment Capture feature activated by a long press of the camera button, and instantly starts recording the subject in full-HD (high-end Lumia phones will be able to capture in 4K). Each of the frames captured in the video is a 2MP shot that can be saved as an individual photo.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The best part is Rich Capture that allows capturing and merging multiple images together simultaneously, and applying auto HDR with dynamic exposure steps and flash settings. This means that the camera automatically detects if you need a flash and captures a few images with flash and some without it. After the shoot, it lets you merge the best pictures and control the amount of lighting with a slider. The auto-HDR feature works in a similar manner.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Unfortunately, our unit did not come with the Lumia Camera so we could not test out the new features. The app will be rolled out to the phone in the fourth quarter of 2014.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The Denim update also comes with improved image processing algorithms for clearer lowlight photos. It also offers "Hey Cortana" voice activation similar to hands free versions of Siri and Google Now and allows users to say "Hey Cortana" while the phone is idle to activate it.The feature is powered by the phone's SensorCore technology. It didn't work for us as it reportedly supports phones with Qualcomm Snapdragon 80x processors.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Cortana now works in India if you activate and select UK English in the speech settings. It worked fairly well and was able to detect our speech most of the times. It is not as good as Google Now when it comes to localisation but is slightly better than Siri. The feature is still in alpha so we'll not discuss it at length.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The Glance Screen feature has also got an update and now shows more information at a glance on the lock screen including Bing Weather, or Bing Health & Fitness data, in addition to time and date, notifications and application data.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Nokia Lumia 830 comes with a large number of preloaded apps (including Flipboard, BoxTV,PicsArt, Snapdeak, Times City and WeChat) in addition to Nokia and Microsoft apps. Thankfully most of these apps can be removed.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />More third party apps and games are now available for Windows Phone 8, but it still pales in comparison to the app selection offered by Android and iOS. Also, official apps for services like Instagram lack some critical features available on other platform. Line, Twitter and WhatsApp (WhatsApp is officially not supported on Denim) notifications are also delayed. The strength of the software, however, is Microsoft Office Mobile and Here Maps.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Camera</strong><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The Nokia Lumia 830 features a 10MP PureView camera with a 1/ 3.4-inch sensor, f/2.2 aperture and Zeiss lens. It features optical image stabilization and unlike the Lumia 1020 and 1520, does not employ oversampling. The camera module comes with 6-lens optics, Backside-illuminated image sensor, and a true 16:9 sensor<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43969570.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />While the Lumia 830 features a smaller sensor in terms of Megapixels compared to flagship phones, it still offers one of the best results. The quality of images captured outdoors, in daylight was excellent with good level of detail, accurate colour reproduction, little or no noise and good contrast.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43969639.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Low-light shots also came out well, though these had some noise, especially under 100% zoom.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43969653.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The phone offers video recording in 1080p and 720p resolution at 24, 25 and 30fps for each, allowing more creative use of the camera. It also offers the ability to record videos in Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 Surround Sound. Videos shot with the phone were impressive.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Performance </strong><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The Nokia Lumia 830 is powered by a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The specifications are more mid-range or budget (Android phones like Moto G are powered by Snapdragon 400) than flagship but we must remember that Windows Phone is not a very resource hungry operating system.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The Lumia 830 comes with 16GB internal storage that can be expanded with the help of a microSD card (supports cards of up to 128GB). External storage support is a big plus.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The phone scored 11,939 in Antutu benchmark, and, 1145/10fps and 1737/15fps in GFXBench 2.5 Egypt HD offscreen and onscreen tests, respectively. We don't endorse benchmark tests and do not recommend a phone based solely on benchmarks as real world performance is different at times.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43968838.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />While the phone's hardware is not top-of-the-line, it delivers great performance when it comes to launching and switching between apps, browsing websites and scrolling inside apps.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />We were able to play graphics intensive games like Asphalt 8 without any hiccups even at visual effects set to maximum level. The phone was able to play HD videos and supports most popular video formats.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The phone comes with GPS and A-GPS for navigation and maps and was easily able to lock a signal. It also comes with NFC connectivity to initiate file transfers to other NFC-enabled phones and receive data from NFC tags. It worked as promised. It does not support 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which means it will not work with new routers capable of offering higher transfer speeds.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Coming to battery life, the 2200mAh battery of the phone helps in achieving a respectable backup. With the phone's brightness set to automatic and intermittent use of WiFi and 3G, the phone lasted a full day (9-10 hours) with usage comprising few hours of phone calls, casual gaming, an hour of web browsing and accessing Twitter and Facebook, in addition to clicking a few pictures.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />We did not encounter any issues with the network reception and call quality was good, most of the times.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><strong style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">Verdict</strong><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />At a price of Rs 28,799, we don't have any qualms in recommending the Lumia 830. The phone is solidly built, comes with a great camera and offers good performance. It is without doubt a well rounded smartphone, although not a high-end flagship, and offers good value for your money. Having said that, Windows Phone still has a long way to go before it can match up to Android.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><img _src="/photo/43968884.cms" style="background: transparent; border: 0px; font-size: 15px; margin: 0px 0px 14px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" /><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />There are some good Android alternatives available in the market. The Google Nexus 5 sports high-end hardware and offers stock-Android but sports an average camera and lacks a microSD card slot. The first-generation Motorola Moto X is still an excellent option though it also has the same limitations. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Neo is also a good option if you need a phone with a bigger screen and a stylus.</div> </div> <span id="storyendpath" style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"></span><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="clrbth" style="background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; clear: both; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 10px 0px 0px; vertical-align: baseline;"> </div> <div class="flL" style="-webkit-text-stroke-width: 0px; background: rgb(255, 255, 255); border: 0px; color: #3f3f3f; float: left; font-family: arial; font-size: 13px; font-style: normal; font-variant: normal; font-weight: normal; letter-spacing: normal; line-height: 20px; margin: 0px 10px 0px 0px; orphans: auto; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left; text-indent: 0px; text-transform: none; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: normal; widows: auto; word-spacing: 0px;"> </div> </div>

Nokia X budget Android smartphone purportedly spotted in benchmark listing

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> <div class="newslist_img" style="color: #4e4e4e; float: left; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-right: 10px; margin-top: 10px; outline: none;"> <img alt="nokia-rm-980-benchmark-635.jpg" class="imgbdr" id="HeadContent_FullstoryCtrl_mainstoryimage" src="http://cdn.ndtv.com/tech/images/gadgets/nokia-rm-980-benchmark-635.jpg" style="background-color: white; border: 1px solid rgb(225, 225, 225); outline: none; padding: 4px;" /></div> <div style="color: #4e4e4e; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; outline: none;"> </div> <div class="" id="HeadContent_FullstoryCtrl_fulldetails" style="color: #4e4e4e; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; outline: none;"> With each passing day, Nokia's yet-to-be-confirmed first Android phone, the Nokia X gets tipped in new leaks, fuelling speculation that the Finnish handset maker may actually unveil the device.</div> <div class="" id="HeadContent_FullstoryCtrl_fulldetails" style="color: #4e4e4e; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; outline: none;"> <br /></div> The new leak comes via Browsermark 2 benchmark's database, which lists a device believed to be the Nokia X (aka Project Normandy), running Android on top. According to the Browsermark 2 database, the alleged Nokia X device comes with model number RM-980, and scores 1885.88 in the test.<br /> <br /> Unfortunately, the listing does not reveal any details about the device but includes an image that purportedly shows Nokia X wearing Nexus 5's wallpaper and home screen icons. However, the current image contradicts earlier reports that claimed that Nokia, following the lead of Amazon, has been working on a fully-tailored or forked version of Android, like the software on the online retail giant's Kindle Fire tablet range.<br /> <br /> The alleged Nokia X was recently listed at a Vietnamese online retailer that have revealed most of the specifications, including a 4-inch TFT display with a resolution of 480x854 (FWVGA) pixels; a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon 200 processor; 5-megapixel rear camera; microSD card support and Android 4.4 KitKat.<br /> <br /> Further, the listing seemingly confirmed that the rumoured Nokia X would come with dual-SIM support, while connectivity options include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE, AGPS and Micro-USB. Other specifications include 4GB of inbuilt storage and Adreno 302 GPU.<br /> <br /> Notably, the listing claimed that the alleged Nokia X supports Google services like Google Play store, Google Search, Google Now, Google Maps, Calendar and YouTube.<br /> <br /> The alleged Nokia X aka Nokia Normandy is said to get introduced in the upcoming MWC 2014 event held in Barcelona starting from 24 February.</div>

The leaked image comes via ViziLeaks, who writes on Twitter, "and the waiting game begins...".<br /> <br /> The leaked image shows the alleged Nokia Normandy's rear panel, which is notably reminiscent of Nokia's Lumia Windows Phone smartphones. Unfortunately, the new leaked image does not reveal anything new about the alleged Nokia Normandy Android Phone.<br /> <br /> Earlier, Nokia's Normandy budget Android phone was purportedly leaked in multiple images on Tuesday. A Twitter user named @picturepan2 posted an image that supposedly revealed the second engineering prototype of the alleged Nokia Normandy Android phone, with a live image showing the Android operating system. There was no word on the version, and a proprietary launcher was also visible.<br /> <br /> While the popular phone tipster, @evleaks also posted a render that purportedly reveals the Nokia Normandy in multiple colours. The leaked render showed the rumoured Normandy in six colour variants including Black, Cyan, Green, Red, White and Yellow.<br /> <br /> The leaked render also showed the alleged Normandy phone's homescreen housing apps like MixRadio, Skype, Twitter, Plants Vs. Zombies, and gallery among others. It's worth pointing out that the homescreen of the alleged Normandy looked very similar to the tiles-based UI seen on Lumia Windows Phone 8 devices.</div>

Nokia Lumia 1520 review: Small step into big boys' club

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> The phablet (big screen phones) segment has mostly been dominated by Android, with Samsung ruling the roost thanks to its Note devices. Even Chinese players like Huawei and Indian brands have tried to capitalize on the new trend. Finnish handset maker Nokia finally seems to have realized late it had missed out on the frenzy. The result is its latest Lumia smartphone, the Lumia 1520.<br /> <br /> The Nokia Lumia 1520 not only features a 6-inch screen, it is also the first Windows Phone 8 device to sport a full-HD display and house a quad-core processor. Interestingly, it is the first device that runs Windows Phone 8 GDR 3 or Black (Nokia's build of the OS), the latest iteration of the mobile operating system. Does the Lumia 1520 have the potential to challenge the Android phablets out there? We try to find out, in our review.<br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK76VlzO455M-MwuNM08CUDKcrNsS_itt8phdc6qNqRz69qhySvxv4nPkJ1KqRewoq0o0k1X8WM0W6P6uWaA6WL8bM8VhSiVDeU1LKlEjMaQ6Bumur6TgaV2-ieOkPFEIdQ44a2HUzixY/s1600/28469009.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK76VlzO455M-MwuNM08CUDKcrNsS_itt8phdc6qNqRz69qhySvxv4nPkJ1KqRewoq0o0k1X8WM0W6P6uWaA6WL8bM8VhSiVDeU1LKlEjMaQ6Bumur6TgaV2-ieOkPFEIdQ44a2HUzixY/s1600/28469009.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Build and design - Nokia's biggest phone ever</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> At first glance, the Nokia Lumia 1520 looks like a big shiny slab of glass contoured by a colourful frame. Joining the league of the Sony Xperia Z Ultra and the HTC One Max, the phone is certainly one of the largest available in the market at the moment. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Lumia 1520 sports a quality polycarbonate chasis. We got a yellow coloured phone as our review unit. It is safe to say that the premium polycarbonate used in the phone's body is accentuated by the phone's matte finish. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The phone's edges are rounded but the corners are not curved, making the shell look more rectangular, giving the phone a sharp look. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The front of the phone is dominated by its 6-inch full-HD ClearBlack IPS LCD panel. The display panel bevels at the edges. Nokia has deployed Gorilla Glass 2 to protect the display against scratches. The three capacitive touch buttons for Back, Start and Search are placed below the display. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Similar to other phones in the Lumia range, the right edge of the phone has three hardware buttons, namely the volume rocker, the power key and the camera shutter key. Thanks to this placement, it is easy to access the power button. All the keys offer good tactile feedback. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The left edge features compartments for the nano-sim and the microSD card. The cards can be placed with the help of trays that can be ejected with the help of a sharp object or the tool that comes with the phone. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> It is important to know that the Lumia 1520 is the first Nokia phone and one of the very few phones (the iPhone 5, 5S and 5C being the other ones) to use a nano-sim. At this point, getting a nano-sim is more of a hassle, especially for people who swap their phones frequently. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The micro-USB port is located at the bottom edge while the 3.5mm headset jack sits at the top. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The back of the phone looks similar to that of the Lumia 925, with the big 20MP camera lens slightly protruding out, and the dual-LED flash located right above it. You'll also see some minimalist Nokia branding and a speaker grill at the back. The Lumia 1520 features four microphones, two at the front and two at the back. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Lumia 1520 variant sold in India comes with wireless charging compatible with Qi standard compliant chargers. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> We feel that the phone is well built and exudes a feeling of durability. However, its unusually large form factor definitely hinders portability. The phone doesn't fit in the average trouser pocket and is difficult to lug around. It is also not very comfortable to hold, especially if you're on a long duration call, or use the phone a lot for voice. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> While the device is better for use as a phone compared to 7-inch tablets with voice calling, it still doesn't fit the bill when it comes to ergonomics. What makes it worse is that Nokia hasn't optimized it for one hand usage.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9MVPMsmH18wMM9kf0hpsxYV4MLDr8WfXB7wGYJigWAtDGKqr8bhi0JVWWCgwS151aXMZRvxFOrOr0XZwj7EfETcwJ9nQYA99fxmxAD1S7Je-_jEikqTdnyhB3wlxwLetQFIS8RwnUqiU/s1600/28469010.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9MVPMsmH18wMM9kf0hpsxYV4MLDr8WfXB7wGYJigWAtDGKqr8bhi0JVWWCgwS151aXMZRvxFOrOr0XZwj7EfETcwJ9nQYA99fxmxAD1S7Je-_jEikqTdnyhB3wlxwLetQFIS8RwnUqiU/s1600/28469010.jpg" /></a></div> <br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh58nhShT9pLIj64lcZgQVnpv1PGw86gpNQ4Vy4QB7jnk23MmJJeavzPm3eNe41oEDXUEm1eHxfrgPNdGobrCPKq-JsBJR8l6yD0P2xTiIXFFWZT-pGugQcSwjhQcjJPmYVO0yy6et3uDA/s1600/28469144.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh58nhShT9pLIj64lcZgQVnpv1PGw86gpNQ4Vy4QB7jnk23MmJJeavzPm3eNe41oEDXUEm1eHxfrgPNdGobrCPKq-JsBJR8l6yD0P2xTiIXFFWZT-pGugQcSwjhQcjJPmYVO0yy6et3uDA/s1600/28469144.jpg" /></a></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Display - The first full-HD Windows Phone device</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Nokia Lumia 1520 features a 6-inch full-HD (1080 x 1920p) ClearBlack IPS LCD panel with a pixel density of 368ppi and Gorilla Glass 2 protection. The phone's display offers sharp and crisp text and graphics, along with superior viewing angles. We found the screen to be less reflective and outdoor legibility was excellent. We did find brightness levels to be less than acceptable even after setting the brightness to automatic. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Nokia offers special settings for tweaking the display's colour profile with options to set saturation and temperature levels according to your own preference. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The touch panel on the display is extremely sensitive and can work even with gloves on. At times, we felt that this lead to accidental touches, especially while scrolling through social feeds or a webpage littered with links, due to the big screen. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> We feel that it is crucial for a big screen phone to sport a high quality display, as it is one of its key selling points, and the Lumia 1520's display scores well in this department. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Software - Black is an incremental update The Lumia 1520 runs Windows Phone 8's GDR 3 build, the latest iteration of the OS. Nokia calls it Black, adding its own software enhancements. The build brings support for full-HD (1080p) displays and quad-core processors. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> There are not many significant changes in terms of the user interface and functionality, compared to the Amber build (GDR2) of the OS. For a full review of the Windows Phone OS, read our Nokia Lumia 1020 review. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The new build includes a Driving Mode that lets you limit the notifications and alerts displayed on the home screen, whenever the handset is paired with Bluetooth devices. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The other major (and much demanded) change is the ability to lock the screen rotation but the only way to toggle it is through the phone's Settings. Also, the Start screen doesn't offer a landscape mode. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Multitasking is also better in the GDR3 as you can close apps from the task switcher through a Close App button. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Black build also allows you to disable 'Glance' when the phone is charging and allows you to change the colour of the glance notifications to green and blue in Night mode. The Glance screen was introduced with the Amber update and allowed the phone's screen to display the time, battery condition and vibrate mode indicator while the phone's screen is locked, without the battery taking a hit. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Interestingly, the Black update adds support for new glance notifications including notifications for missed calls, messages, emails and even other apps such as WhatsApp. The update is definitely in the right direction. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The OS also adds support for Bluetooth 4 Low Energy mode bringing in compatibility with smartwatches and fitness bands. It also offers an enhanced sunlight readability mode altering the shade of black under sunlight to increase screen legibility. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> What leaves us disappointed is that Nokia and Microsoft haven't optimized the OS to take full advantage of the increased screen real estate which is ironical. For instance, the email app and Internet Explorer browser just display two to three lines of additional text in email and web pages. A lot of space is wasted in increasing the size of UI elements like menu bars and buttons. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Even the keyboard is bigger but there's no option to align it at the right or left hand sides of the screen, making one hand typing cumbersome. Similarly we would have loved if the email client would offer previews for messages in landscape mode. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> However, the Start screen can now fit more tiles and all the apps scale well on the big 1080p screen of the Lumia 1520. Nokia has included its own apps, including the reliable HERE Drive+ and HERE Maps, Nokia Mix Radio (erstwhile Nokia Music), Nokia StoryTeller(for grouping photos based on location, people tagged and time) and PhotoBeamer for sharing photos. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Nokia Lumia 1520 will also come preloaded with productivity apps like InNote and CamScanner, digital magazine Zinio and Flipkart eBooks, gaming and fitness apps like Rail Rush and Adidas miCoach, imaging apps like Camera 360 and movies apps Your Movies, Big Flix and Vimeo. Depending on whether you love or loath pre-loaded apps, this can be a double-edged sword. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> More third party apps and games are now available for Windows Phone 8, but it still pales in comparison to the app selection offered by Android and iOS. We are looking forward to the Windows Phone 8.1 update that will fill more gaps and hopefully add a centralized notifications destination. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Camera - PureView for the win!</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Nokia Lumia 1520 features a 20MP PureView camera with a 1/ 2.5" sensor and Zeiss lens. It features optical image stabilization and just like the Lumia 1020, employs oversampling. Nokia's Camera app allows you to take pictures in 5MP and 16MP (16:9)/ 19MP(4:3) resolutions simultaneously, with lossless zoom. This allows the camera to get more detail from multiple pixels and get a good quality lower resolution image. Alternatively, you can also choose to just shoot in 5MP.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSC6WLjqw0alsZxHYMI16YiRgy_T01Levp8q6XB13iOMFi3Lu9Edyrbeju2hd-Ov7Bz8XYdkpIMtkMbGhmbjUqigoeq6J4aRtPOBO3B1trTMx9ABantlEfL1qf970TZKfklLB7zuNUZTo/s1600/28469163.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSC6WLjqw0alsZxHYMI16YiRgy_T01Levp8q6XB13iOMFi3Lu9Edyrbeju2hd-Ov7Bz8XYdkpIMtkMbGhmbjUqigoeq6J4aRtPOBO3B1trTMx9ABantlEfL1qf970TZKfklLB7zuNUZTo/s1600/28469163.jpg" width="320" /></a></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> For the first time, the phone's camera also lets you shoot in RAW as it takes 16MP DNG (digital negatives) files that contain all information, and can be used for advanced processing in professional photo editing apps. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> While the Lumia 1520 features a smaller sensor in terms of Megapixels it still offers one of the best results, second only to the Lumia 1020, Nokia's camera flagship. The quality of images captured outdoors, in daylight was excellent with good level of detail, accurate colour reproduction, little or no noise and good contrast. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Low-light shots also came out well, though these had much more noise, especially under 100% zoom. The phone features a dual-LED flash which is one of the best we've seen. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The phone offers video recording in 1080p and 720p resolution at 24, 25 and 30fps for each, allowing more creative use of the camera. It also offers an Audio bass filter and Directional stereo offering rich sound quality in videos. The phone also includes Optical Image Stabilization which eliminates shake. The Lumia 1520 takes excellent videos. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The phone features Nokia's new Camera app that also integrates Nokia Smart Cam functionality. The Smart Cam mode lets you capture a sequence of 10 photos and select the best one among them or combine all the pictures into one, choosing between different effects. The effects offered include Motion Focus that creates an illusion of motion, Action Shot that lets you show action by adding a strobe effect. You can also select the best faces in-group photos and even remove moving objects.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Performance - Beast of a Lumia</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Nokia Lumia 1520 is powered by a 2.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM and Adreno 330 GPU. It is undoubtedly the most powerful Windows Phone device available at the moment. While Windows Phone is not a very resource hungry operating system, the powerful hardware of the phone helps when you're playing graphics intensive games like Asphalt 8 or running multiple apps in the background. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> We also noticed that the camera takes less time to process images (even the RAW ones) compared to the huge time taken by the Lumia 1020. We're not sure if there are enough apps available on the platform (other than games) that can utilize the powerful hardware on the phone. But then, that comes across as a weakness of the platform rather than that of the phone. The high-end hardware does make the phone a little more future-proof. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Lumia 1520 comes with 32GB internal storage that can be expanded with the help of a microSD card (supports cards of up to 64GB). External storage support is a big plus compared to earlier Lumia devices. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Coming to battery life, the 3400mAh giant battery of the phone helps in achieving a respectable backup. With the phone's brightness set to automatic and intermittent use of WiFi and 3G, the phone lasted more than a day with usage comprising few hours of phone calls, casual gaming, an hour or two of web browsing and accessing Twitter and Facebook, in addition to clicking a few pictures.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> We did not encounter any issues with the network reception and call quality was good, most of the times. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Verdict - A pricey affair</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> The Lumia 1520 is an excellent multimedia device. Watching videos, reading ebooks and magazines and browsing pictures made for a joyful experience on it. However, we see it more as a portable mini-tablet than an easy-to-carry big-screen phone. This is not just true for the Lumia 1520 but for all 5.5inch+ devices. But Lumia 1520 takes the problem farther. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> Also, unlike Samsung, which offers a good use case, equipping its Note devices with the S-Pen stylus, we don't see Nokia adding additional value to the device. The software could also do with some tweaks and more customized apps suited to take advantage of the big screen.</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> At a price point of nearly Rs 47,000, we feel that the Lumia 1520 is an expensive, over-priced proposition. </div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> We'd recommend waiting for a price cut if you want to buy it. Alternatively, if you're only looking at a phone-tablet hybrid and are open to an Android device, we'd recommend picking up the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 instead.</div> <div style="text-align: center;"> <br /></div> </div>

Nokia Normandy budget Android phone still in development: Report

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"> Nokia's first Android phone, rumoured to be dubbed Normandy, might still be alive and could see light of the day soon, if @evleaks is to be believed.<br /> The popular phone tipster in a bid to put an end to further speculation about Nokia's upcoming Android phone, said that reports saying the Nokia Normandy will not see the light of day are incorrrect. The tweet by @evleaks reads, "The reports of Normandy's death have been greatly exaggerated."<br /> <br /> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFiXlg0tup0Q_ig74TiILd0UQPxmm6aRbgW9DTRStDqgNqo-VWTT02roOREGKpKwfq8p__SH1i4NYeH3ND4lSZSJTcJOb95RXWpnTGPrmN6T1STGBA0RiWUQIs-2sbOalQzJVIHNCYEIY/s1600/nokia-normandy-leaked-render-635.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="239" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFiXlg0tup0Q_ig74TiILd0UQPxmm6aRbgW9DTRStDqgNqo-VWTT02roOREGKpKwfq8p__SH1i4NYeH3ND4lSZSJTcJOb95RXWpnTGPrmN6T1STGBA0RiWUQIs-2sbOalQzJVIHNCYEIY/s320/nokia-normandy-leaked-render-635.jpg" width="320" /></a>Unfortunately, the tweet by the tipster does not shed much light on the development of the Nokia Normandy phone. It is noteworthy that in the past, @evleaks has come out with fairly accurate information regarding yet-to-be-announced devices and we will not be surprised if he manages to hit the bull's eye even with this leak.<br /> <br /> Earlier reports had suggested that the Nokia Normandy phone was the Finnish giant's first device based on Google's Android OS, and the Nokia Normandy efforts had been described as 'full steam ahead'. However, there has been no clarity as of now whether the alleged Nokia Normandy Android phone is true or just a rumour.<br /> <br /> It would be interesting to see if Nokia can release its rumoured Android phone ahead of the completion of the Microsoft deal. Especially considering that after signing the pact, Nokia can neither license the 'Nokia' brand for use in connection with mobile device sales nor use the brand on its own mobile devices for a specific period.<br /> <br /> Prior to this, Nokia's alleged Normandy was leaked in a render showing the device in various colour variants.<br /> <br /> The leaked render showed the yet-to-announced device sporting a similar design to the Asha touch range of phones with a physical back button on the front panel. An earlier report had claimed that the Finnish handset maker might launch the Normandy in 2014. The report also revealed that Nokia, following the lead of Amazon, has been working on a fully-tailored or forked version of Android, like the software on the online retail giant's Kindle Fire tablet range.<br /> <br /> For the latest technology news and reviews, like us on Facebook or follow us on Twitter and get the NDTV Gadgets app for Android or iOS.</div>

Pureview also has full HD 1080p video recording and playback with 4X lossless zoom.<br /> <br /> Significantly, a software upgrade promised by Nokia with the latest Belle feature pack software upgrade for its other smartphones will add cinematic 5.1 Dolby surround sound for better music and movies experience to handsets like Nokia 700, 701 and Nokia 603.<br /> <br /> With Dolby technologies in its smartphones, Nokia claims to turn them into devices which can deliver high-definition (HD) content with Dolby Digital Plus 5.1-channel surround sound to HDTVs, audio/video receivers, and home theater systems.<br /> <br /> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ74DA_gt8yeW1dhhK5WH5D16-oBMxmAvODgiVCaBSnDd1D7zfb2uBpq2b7W_f0g3gKLg-Z006p8UOJ976PaH_9QddQCUHfaUwP1AnvkIdPyZDsykWrf8OmJvohK6k1HbOYlwjUpX_ujg/s1600/nokia+808+pure+view.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ74DA_gt8yeW1dhhK5WH5D16-oBMxmAvODgiVCaBSnDd1D7zfb2uBpq2b7W_f0g3gKLg-Z006p8UOJ976PaH_9QddQCUHfaUwP1AnvkIdPyZDsykWrf8OmJvohK6k1HbOYlwjUpX_ujg/s400/nokia+808+pure+view.jpg" width="290" /></a>Pureview 808 comes in only black and white colours and will be available across Nokia retail outlets starting Thursday with an MRP of Rs 34,999. It is powered by a single core 1.3Ghz microprocessor which seems inadequate but according to Nokia, the phone has another processor dedicated to the camera function, thus ensuring a reasonably good performance. It has a 16GB internal storage, expendable up to 32GB with a microSD card. The RAM seems rather low at 512MB.<br /> <br /> Speaking at the launch, Vipul Mehrotra, director and head of smart devices, Nokia India said, "Nokia has always been known for its imaging legacy. What started off with a simple objective to create the most advanced imaging device, the Nokia 808 Pureview has evolved into something extremely revolutionary.<br /> <br /> PTI adds: Mehrotra, however, clarified that the handset would not compete with cameras per se. "We are not looking at competing with cameras. Users can do other things with Pureview 808 apart from just clicking pictures," he said.<br /> <br /> Asked if one would see the Pureview technology coming to its other handsets, Mehrotra said, "We would like to introduce this technology across our lines of products."<br /> <br /> <br /> <div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"> "Nokia is a full line player with focus across product lines. Our aim is to bring innovation at every price point, be it the Asha series or the Lumia devices. We would look at taking the Pureview technology, which has taken five years to develop, across categories," he added.</div> <div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"> Priced at Rs 33,899 MRP, the phone is also placed cheaper than Samsung's SIII (Rs 43,180) and HTC One (42,999).</div> <div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #3f3f3f; font-family: Georgia; font-size: 15px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; text-align: -webkit-auto;"> Till now, Nokia was offering 12MP as the highest available capacity for cameras with its N8.
