Over the last two days, all major computing and mobile technology related firms have been making interesting showcases of their upcoming products and technologies at CES 2014. Jumping onto the bandwagon, Toshiba, on Tuesday unveiled what seem to be the world's first ever 4K laptops at the ongoing event in Las Vegas. The two laptops, Tecra W50 and the Satellite P50t will not only feature full 4K Ultra-HD displays but will also run the new Windows 8.1 operating systems. Pricing and availability were not revealed by the company.<div style="outline: none;">
While the target audience for the powerful devices are across a wide segment, if reports are to be believed then the devices are a little on the chunkier side, with the stunning display in tow. The announcement was further endorsed by Microsoft, which announced, "Today Toshiba has made 4K display technology more accessible to mobile professionals and enthusiasts by announcing two exciting new Windows 8.1 laptops that feature integrated 15.6" 4K Ultra-HD displays. These new Toshiba 4K laptops will take laptop screen resolution to the next level!", on their official blog.</div>
<div style="outline: none;">
The Toshiba Tecra W50 is designed for professionals working with graphically-intensive applications, packing an integrated NVIDIA Quadro K2100M graphics with 2GB dedicated memory, fourth generation Intel Core processor, and a 15.6-inch 4K Ultra-HD display (3840 x 2160), 282 PPI, colour calibrated display.</div>
<span class="mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image" style="display: inline; outline: none;"><img alt="toshiba-Satellite-P50t-ces-635x475.jpg" class="mt-image-center" height="475" src="http://cdn.ndtv.com/tech/images/gadgets/toshiba-Satellite-P50t-ces-635x475.jpg" style="display: block; margin: 0px auto 20px; outline: none; text-align: center;" width="635" /></span><div style="outline: none;">
The second on the list is the Satellite P50t, which features the same display and resolution as the Tecra W50 and has an integrated touch functionality along with it. It could be safer to assume that the device will be targeted towards a more younger audience. The 4K Ultra-HD screen also features edge-to-edge glass with vibrant colour, crystal clarity, and higher contrast. Incidentally Toshiba didn't reveal any of the specifications for the P50t.</div>
<div style="outline: none;">
Both the Toshiba 4K laptops will go on sale in the middle of 2014. The pricing of the devices hasn't been revealed either. Toshiba might just charge top dollar for the two devices, as industry pundits are predicting. An interesting point in consideration to support this argument is that Panasonic will also be retailing their Panasonic Toughpad 4K UT-MB5, with its 20-inch 2840x2560 pixel resolution screen, in mid-February for $5,999 (Rs. 3,70,000) after first being revealed a year ago at CES 2013. While Toshiba is dealing with the laptop division they are certainly the first ones to announce a laptop and the pricing can be anybody's guess.</div>

If you want a tablet that can take anything you can throw at it -- or just throw it -- then the new Panasonic Toughpads are for you. Best of all, you get a choice of Windows 8 or Android.<br />
<br />
The Toughpad FZ-G1 is a 10-inch Windows 8 Pro system packing a 1,920 x 1,200 display, 1.9GHz Ivy Bridge Intel Core i5-3437U processor, a 128GB SSD (upgradable to 2654GB), and up to 8GB of RAM. The system is powered by a battery listed as offering 8-hours of life.<br />
<br />
The JT-B1 is a 7-inch tablet running Android 4.0 'Ice Cream Sandwich.' It features a 1,024 x 600 display, and comes equipped with a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP 4660 processor, 16GB storage and 1GB RAM.<br />
<br />
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #252525; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Both Toughpad have been put through -- and passed -- the rigorous MIL-STD-810G test for drops, fluid ingress and temperature, in order to ensure they can deliver reliable performance under conditions that would destroy normal tablets.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #252525; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
"For nearly 20 years, Panasonic has engineered the most reliable mobile computing devices on the market," said Rance M. Poehler, president, Panasonic System Communications Company of North America. "Because our customers know they can count on our products to deliver performance and return on investment, Panasonic – through its Toughbook brand – holds nearly 80 percent market share in the rugged mobile device space. We believe our engineering acumen, vertical market expertise and reputation for reliability, backed by our world-class service, will result in the Toughpad family being the leading B2B tablet solution in the coming years."</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #252525; font-family: Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; line-height: 18px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Panasonic hopes that the Toughpad will allow the company to grab 50 percent of the ruggedized tablet space by 2015.</div>

The Windows 8 Toughpad will set you back $2,900 and will be available in March, while the smaller Android version has a $1,300 price tag and should hit shelves in February.</div>

Now the company is expanding into the burgeoning Windows mini-tablet space with the new FZ-M1.<br />
<br />
Toughpads aren't designed for the consumer market, so this isn't a 7-inch tablet with measly specs. It will be the first Toughpad to use an Intel fourth-generation Core (or Haswell) processor -- in this case, the Core i5-4302Y -- and includes a hefty 8GB of RAM and either 128GB or 256GB of solid state storage. Those parts are needed to run Windows 8.1 Pro and power the 1,280x800 touchscreen.<br />
<br />
The "tough" in Toughpad means that it's also certified to handle the MIL-STD-810G and IP65 specifications for drops (up to 5 feet), water and dust resistance, and temperature and climate extremes. It also includes security features like a Trusted Platform Module v1.2 chip, along with Computrace and Intel anti-theft technology.<br />
<br />
Ruggedizing means that the FZ-M1 doesn't exude the sex appeal of other mini-tablets (just check out the image above for proof), but Panasonic still claims that it's the "world’s thinnest and lightest fully-rugged 7-inch Windows tablet," weighing in at 1.2 pounds and 0.71 inches in thickness. That factors in a raised bezel designed to protect the screen from impact.<br />
<br />
It may also be tough to swallow the FZ-M1's starting price: $2,099, which is before you add options like 4G LTE connectivity, long-life battery, and other accessories. Of course, some occupations require rugged mobile devices like the Toughpad, so if you are need of one, starting saving for when the FZ-M1 becomes available in the spring of this year.</div>

Panasonic, expanding its Toughpad range of tablets, has launched the Toughpad FZ-M1 tablet at CES 2014. The rugged tablet, unlike previous iterations, is targeted at the enterprise segment.<br />

The new Panasonic Toughpad FZ-M1 is based on Windows 8.1 Pro (64-bit) and features an IP65 fully sealed fanless design. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Toughpad FZ-M1 includes a 128GB SSD storage, while also comes with a 256GB SSD option. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The tablet sports a 5-megapixel rear camera with LED Flash and a 2-megapixel autofocus webcam for video calling. It packs a 3220mAh battery that according to the company can provide up to 8 hours of battery life. The Toughpad FZ-M1 measures 203x132x18mm and weighs 540 grams.</div>

Micromax has built LapTab in partnership with Intel, which is pushing these hybrid devices capable of supporting both Android and Windows 8.1. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">While more companies from across the world will come out with similar tablets - or maybe you can call them laptops that transform - Micromax is among the first companies in the world to prepare this hybrid device. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">LapTab will launch in India in February. But the product is ready for the prime time. We spent some time with it to tell you our first impression of LapTab. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">In terms of hardware, there are two elements to LapTab. The first is the tablet. It has a 10.1-inch screen with a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. The screen shows decent colours but doesn't match the contrast or richness of colours found on high-end tablets like Nexus 7 or iPad. Brightness too is on the lower side and could be an issue if you use the device under direct sunlight. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The tablet has a plastic body and does feel a bit cheap. But thankfully, there are no loose parts and there is no bending and creaking. Given it is all plastic, LapTab doesn't feel too heavy in hand. In terms of connectivity and ports, there are lots of options. HDMI port is there and so is the micro USB 3.0 port, which is similar to the one found on Galaxy Note 3 and is backward compatible with micro USB 2.0. There is also a slot for microSD card. The tablet supports Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">In terms of internal hardware, LapTab is well equipped. It is powered by a dual-core Intel N2805 processor. It runs at 1.46GHz and is fast enough, considering it is powering a device that has full version of Windows. The internal storage is 32GB or 64GB. LapTab has 2GB RAM. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The device has a touch sensitive home button with Windows logo. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The other part of the hardware is a keyboard cover. The build quality of cover feels slightly better than the tablet. The keys are nice and offer good amount of 'clicky' feel considering it is a thin cover. This is a pleasant surprise. However the finish of the plastic case attached to the keyboard could have been better. Its corners have sharp edges and taking out or putting the tablet back in the case takes some effort. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">There is still a month to go so it is possible that Micromax will fix these minor flaws. </span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;">The keyboard and the plastic case connect with a flexible synthetic band, which can also act as a tablet stand, similar to how Apple's official cover for iPad functions. There is a magnet inside this band and it attaches to the back cover of LapTab to form a stand.</span></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"><br /></span></span>
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="line-height: 24px;"> </span></span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">While using LapTab, we tried both Android and Windows 8.1. When the device boots up, users get around 10 seconds to make a choice between Android and Windows. If you don't select any OS, then the device boots in the OS that was running on it earlier. If you boot into Android, you get the familiar (almost) stock user interface of Ice Cream Sandwich aka Android 4.2.</span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> </span><br />
<br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">The performance of the device is good though lack of tough glass makes the screen feel a bit less touch sensitive. But scrolling through lists and installed apps and pinch-to-zoom during web browsing is mostly smooth. Just to try out the hardware, we ran GeekBench 3, an app that measures theoretical performance of a processor, on LapTab. The device scored 599 points in single core benchmark and 1001 in multi-core. The single core score, which is more important, is above average. It is around 300 points less than the best performing mobile processors like </span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Qualcomm" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Qualcomm</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> Snapdragon 800. But it is almost 200 points better that the MediaTek processor found in phones like Canvas Turbo score. The multi-core performance is, however, average. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">Under Windows too we found that </span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/LapTab" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">LapTab</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> performs well and without any significant lag. Almost all Windows applications are supported. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">To summarize, LapTab is an intriguing product. Its utility is not yet apparent because hybrid devices tend to sacrifice some of the simplicity associated with tablets. Unless we use the device for a longer duration it is difficult to say if it offers more convenience than a standard tablet or a laptop or not. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">There is also the matter of price and battery life. Without knowing the price and battery life of LapTab it is difficult to ascertain its value. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Rahul-Sharma" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Rahul Sharma</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">, </span><a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/topic/Micromax" pg="asTopicL1" style="background-color: white; color: #024d99; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration: none; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Micromax</a><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;"> co-founder who is in CES to show LapTab to media, believes that LapTab makes a lot of sense, especially for Indian consumers. "You don't have to carry two devices... you can carry just one. LapTab is a laptop when you want the power of a laptop and it's a tablet when you seek the convenience of a tablet," he says. </span><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><br style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px; margin: 0px; outline: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;" /><span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 16px; line-height: 24px;">While it is easy to understand the merit in LapTab and the concept of the hybrid device, we need to use the device for a bit longer to see if it can hit the home run or not.</span></div>

<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
India's second largest smartphone manufacturer Micromax has gone even more international than merely signing up Hugh Jackman to represent its brand. The company made a showing at the world's largest technology showcase event - CES 2014 in Las Vegas.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The event is used by both established technology companies as well as hopeful newcomers to showcase their latest innovations.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
So amid a slew of wearable technology, massive television screens and new futuristic vehicles, what did Micromax launch? No, it was not a phone.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The company instead launched the LapTab, a dual-boot Android and Windows 8 tablet. The LapTab is the first Intel-powered tablet to have a dual-boot OS from the company. It is likely to be made available in February but Micromax has not yet specified a price.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The LapTab is powered by Intel's Bay Trail-M, one of the first devices to be announced with that chipset. Micromax says the use of the Intel Celeron N2805 processor, clocked at 1.4GHz, will result in long battery-life. The tablet runs both Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean and Windows 8. However users will have to reboot the tablet to switch between the two Operating Systems.</div>

The device has a 10.1-inch screen with 1280x800 resolution. It also comes with 2GB RAM and 32 GB internal storage space. It has a 7400 mAh battery, which should ensure better batter performance.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
The device also hasa 2MP front camera with an ambient light sensor but it doesn't have a rear camera. It also supports microSD slot with 64 GB. In terms of connectivity the LapTab supports Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi for internet connectivity. Micromax has not yet announced a cellular model till now.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 22px; margin-bottom: 15px; padding: 7px 0px 0px; text-indent: -0.025em; vertical-align: baseline;">
